The Embassy of Bangladesh in Riyadh has issued an urgent advisory to its expatriate community residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, urging them to strictly adhere to local laws when reporting or dealing with criminal activities.
According to an official press release disseminated by the embassy, Bangladeshi nationals have been cautioned against taking the law into their own hands under any circumstances. The diplomatic mission emphasised that if an expatriate possesses information regarding a crime, or witnesses an illegal act, the correct and lawful recourse is to immediately notify Saudi law enforcement authorities.
The embassy highlighted that residents can utilise the official national emergency hotlines by dialling 999 or 911 to report incidents swiftly.
A central focus of the embassy’s warning is the absolute prohibition of vigilante justice or arbitrary detentions by civilians. The advisory explicitly states:
“Under no circumstances is there any scope for detaining or physically assaulting anyone accused of criminal involvement. Such actions constitute a severe offence under the domestic laws of the Kingdom.”
The diplomatic mission further underscored that illegal detentions, physical torture, or kangaroo courts violate Saudi Arabia’s stringent penal code and could result in severe legal consequences for the perpetrators, including lengthy imprisonment, hefty financial penalties, and subsequent deportation. The embassy has urged the entire community to remain vigilant, patient, and respectful of the host nation’s judicial process.
This directive comes at a time when the Bangladeshi expatriate population in Saudi Arabia remains one of the largest foreign workforces in the Kingdom, numbering over two million. The bilateral relationship between Dhaka and Riyadh has seen robust growth, particularly in manpower cooperation. Saudi authorities have streamlined consular services, recently issuing between 4,000 and 6,000 visas daily for Bangladeshi nationals, reflecting the continuous influx of workers into the Saudi labour market.
Furthermore, bilateral relations have been bolstered by high-level praise from Saudi officials. Recently, the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah commended Bangladesh’s efficient management of its Hajj pilgrims, reinforcing the mutual respect between the two nations.
Given the scale of the diaspora, the Bangladesh Embassy frequently issues targeted guidelines to ensure that citizens do not inadvertently jeopardise their employment status or legal standing through a lack of familiarity with local jurisprudence. Observers note that this latest legal warning is a proactive measure designed to protect the reputation of Bangladeshi expatriates and safeguard them from severe legal jeopardy in the Kingdom.
