The escalating drama of the World Cup has spilt off the pitch and into a fierce diplomatic and personal feud. Following recent controversies surrounding FIFA’s cancellation of a red card, France captain Kylian Mbappé and Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla have become embroiled in a bitter war of words. The confrontation has escalated rapidly, with potential legal consequences looming for the French football star.
The row began shortly after Paraguay’s narrow 1-0 defeat to France. Following the final whistle, Senator Amarilla took to the social media platform X to launch a highly controversial tirade against Mbappé. In her initial posts, she labelled the forward as a “Cameroonian with a colonial mindset,” an “arrogant individual pretending to be French,” and “ugly.” Although she later deleted the inflammatory posts, a sharp counter-reaction from Mbappé prompted the politician to issue a formal open letter outlining her grievances.
In this latest correspondence, Amarilla acknowledged her initial missteps but firmly demanded a public apology from the Real Madrid and France superstar. She clarified that her dispute is not with the nation of France or its citizens, but strictly with Mbappé regarding his conduct.
Amarilla alleges that prior to the match, Mbappé made derogatory remarks that insulted the entire Paraguayan team. According to her, the forward stated, “If we have to play dirty, then we will play dirty.” The senator asserted that this comment was a direct affront to the integrity of Paraguayan football. Furthermore, she claimed that during the match, Mbappé displayed contemptuous behaviour towards his opponents and even shouted profanities in Spanish.
The senator also expressed deep offence at Mbappé’s post-match conduct. Instead of exchanging the customary post-game handshakes with the Paraguayan goalkeeper, Mbappé reportedly ignored his opponent to celebrate the narrow victory. Amarilla emphasised that showing respect to rivals is a fundamental value of sport that must be upheld in both victory and defeat.
While holding her ground, Amarilla expressed remorse for her own initial reactions. She admitted that anger had driven her to use racially charged and insulting language, which she deeply regretted upon reflection. The politician noted that she deleted the original posts because she realised she was perpetuating the exact same cycle of hatred and prejudice that developing nations so often face on the international stage.
Nevertheless, the senator remains furious over subsequent retaliatory remarks attributed to Mbappé, who reportedly described her as “inferior” and “unfit for public office.” Rejecting the insult, Amarilla reminded the footballer that she is a democratically elected representative chosen by the public. Accusing Mbappé of resorting to political and gender-based violence in his rhetoric, the senator concluded her open letter with a definitive ultimatum: if the French captain refuses to withdraw his comments and issue a public apology, she will initiate formal legal proceedings against him.
