A university student has died after a violent clash between two rival local groups in the Pagar area of Tongi, Gazipur, in what police say stemmed from a long-standing personal dispute. Two other people were also injured in the incident, while one suspect has been detained as investigations continue.
The deceased, Manjurul Islam Hasib, 25, was a student at Green University and the son of Tofiqul Islam, a resident of the Pagar area. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Green Life Hospital in Dhanmondi in the early hours of Thursday, 9 July.
The confrontation took place on Wednesday night, 8 July, when two local factions reportedly became involved in a violent altercation linked to previous enmity. The dispute escalated into a physical clash, leaving three people seriously injured.
The other injured victims have been identified as Akash, 25, son of local resident Mostafa Mia, and Imran Hasan Anik, 24, son of Masud Rana. Their current conditions have not been officially disclosed.
According to police, all three injured individuals were initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. As Hasib’s condition rapidly deteriorated, doctors referred him to Green Life Hospital in Dhanmondi for specialised medical care. Despite efforts by medical staff, he died while undergoing treatment in the early hours of Thursday.
The fatality has heightened concerns among local residents over recurring violence arising from unresolved personal disputes. Incidents involving long-standing rivalries have occasionally resulted in serious injuries and fatalities in densely populated urban communities, prompting repeated calls for stronger community mediation and timely law enforcement intervention before conflicts escalate.
Following the incident, police detained Zobayer Hossain, 45, son of Ayat Ali of the Pagar area, in connection with the case. Investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events, the roles of those involved, and whether additional suspects participated in the clash.
Sub-Inspector Tuhin of Tongi East Police Station confirmed the incident and Hasib’s death. He said that one individual had been taken into police custody following the killing of the university student.
Police have not yet disclosed the precise cause of the confrontation beyond describing it as the result of a previous dispute. Authorities are continuing their investigation, collecting witness statements and examining the circumstances that led to the deadly violence. Further legal action is expected as the inquiry progresses.
