A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Meherpur for the murder of his mother-in-law, wrapping up a legal process that began a decade ago. The verdict was delivered on Thursday afternoon, 9 July, by Judge Ali Masud Sheikh of the Meherpur District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
The convict, 52-year-old House Ali, is the son of Mohammad Ali and a resident of Sholotaka village, located within the Gangni sub-district of Meherpur. The prosecution team, led by Public Prosecutor Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin, confirmed the details of the sentencing following the conclusion of the court proceedings.
The roots of the tragic incident date back to 2016, following a bitter domestic dispute. Court documents reveal that House Ali’s wife had formally divorced him that year. Driven by resentment over the marital breakdown, he held his mother-in-law, 65-year-old Phulsuratan, responsible for the separation. In an act of retaliation, House Ali doused the elderly woman in a highly flammable substance and set her on fire. Phulsuratan sustained catastrophic burn injuries during the assault and was rushed to hospital. Despite receiving medical treatment, she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Following her mother’s painful demise, Ambia Khatun—the daughter of the victim and former wife of the attacker—lodged a formal murder case at the Gangni Police Station. Law enforcement officials subsequently arrested House Ali and conducted a thorough investigation, presenting a comprehensive charge sheet to the judiciary. Over the years, the tribunal examined forensic evidence, medical records, and testimonies from multiple witnesses.
After completing all necessary judicial processes and hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution, the tribunal found House Ali guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. The swift enforcement of life sentences in such heinous domestic violence cases highlights the local judiciary’s rigorous stance on crimes against women and the elderly. House Ali was escorted under heavy guard to the district jail to begin his life sentence immediately after the verdict was read aloud in the packed courtroom.
