In Memory of Al Mahmud: A Luminous Star of Bengali Poetry

In the history of modern Bengali poetry, Al Mahmud stands as one of the few poets who secured a permanent place through a distinct voice, a unique poetic style, and an unparalleled artistic depiction of rural life. By seamlessly weaving together themes of love, nature, folklore, history, the Liberation War, and religious and cultural consciousness, he infused Bengali poetry with a completely new dimension. His verses resonate with the scent of Bengal’s soil, rivers, farmers, and rural settlements, while simultaneously exploring timeless human love, sorrow, and the quest for identity.

He was born on 11 July 1936 into the Molla family of Morail village in Brahmanbaria. From his childhood, he possessed a deep affection for literature and culture. Emerging in the literary scene during the 1950s, he quickly established himself as one of the most powerful voices in contemporary Bengali poetry.

His first volume of poetry, Lok Lokantar, was published in 1963, clearly demonstrating his original poetic language. This was followed by Kaler Kolos in 1966, and most notably, Sonali Kabin, which elevated him to an extraordinary height in Bengali literature. Sonali Kabin remains widely celebrated by readers and critics alike as one of the greatest poetry books in the Bengali language, where love, rural life, folklore, and history converge in exceptional artistic beauty.

Beyond poetry, Al Mahmud was a powerful novelist, short story writer, essayist, and autobiographer. Among his notable poetry collections are Mayabi Porda Dule Otho, Adristabadider Rannabanna, Ekchokhkhu Horin, and Mithyabadi Rakhal.

He also left a distinct mark in the realm of novels, with prominent works including Kabilor Bon, Upamohadesh, Dahuki, Aguner Meye, and Chaturanga. His short story collection Pankourir Rokto and his autobiographical book Jebabe Bere Uthi are particularly acclaimed in Bengali literature.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to literature, he was honoured with numerous national and international awards, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award, the Ekushey Padak, the Philips Literary Award, the Shishu Academy (Agrani Bank) Children’s Literary Award, and Kolkata’s Bhanusingha Smriti Puraskar.

While Al Mahmud’s literary career was deeply creative, his personal life was also filled with various controversies and debates. However, transcending ideological differences, his extraordinary poetic genius and artistic creations remain undeniable pillars of Bengali language and literature. His contribution to the treasury of Bengali poetry will forever be etched in gold.

He breathed his last on 15 February 2019. Yet, a poet never truly dies—they live on through their creations. As the poet of Sonali Kabin, Al Mahmud will endure in the Bengali language, in its poetry, and in the hearts of countless readers for as long as Bengali literature survives.
