A 35-year-old man was hacked to death in Bogura over an alleged financial dispute involving a substantial sum of money. The incident took place on Friday night near the Priti Government Primary School in the Latifpur Colony area of the city.
The deceased, Arif Shekh, was the son of Aziz Shekh, a resident of Latifpur Colony. According to his family, the brutal attack was the culmination of a long-standing feud regarding a transaction of approximately 1 million Taka (10 Lakh Taka).
Relatives claimed that a group of men had been actively searching for Arif since Friday afternoon. The attackers reportedly waited for the cover of darkness, ambushing him past midnight when he was walking alone. The assailants used sharp weapons to hack him indiscriminately before fleeing the scene, leaving him to bleed to death on the street.
Arif’s sister, Rumi Begum, levelled direct accusations against a close relative. She stated that Arif was owed 1 million Taka by their maternal uncle, Badal. The refusal to repay this debt had caused severe tension within the family. Rumi alleged that her uncle contracted local youths—including individuals named Selim, Jibon, and Nahid—to carry out the murder to permanently settle the debt.
The local community discovered the blood-stained body and contacted law enforcement. Ibrahim Ali, the Officer-in-Charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, confirmed that officers arrived at the scene around 1:00 am after being alerted by residents.
Police recovered the body and dispatched it to the local morgue for a post-mortem examination. Preliminary inspections revealed multiple deep wounds across Arif’s body, indicating the severity of the assault.
The investigation has also brought Arif’s own background to light. Police records show that the victim was previously accused in several criminal cases filed with the local station, including charges related to murder, illegal weapons possession, mugging, and narcotics.
While the family maintains that the financial dispute was the sole motive, the authorities are exploring all possibilities, including whether past criminal rivalries or internal gang conflicts played a role in the targeted killing. Detectives are currently conducting raids across various parts of the city to apprehend the named suspects who have gone into hiding.
