Police have recovered the bodies of an unidentified young man and an elderly auto-rickshaw driver from two separate locations in the Sirajdikhan sub-district of Munshiganj. The discoveries, made on Saturday afternoon, have prompted distinct investigations by local and railway law enforcement agencies trying to piece together the final moments of both victims.
The first body was discovered by residents near the Nimtala railway station area. Alarmed by the sight of a young man lying motionless beside the tracks, locals alerted the authorities. A detachment from the Dhaka Railway Police arrived at the scene shortly after midday to retrieve the remains. The body was subsequently transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination.
Sub-Inspector Mohammad Kaiyum Ali of the Dhaka Railway Police commented on the initial findings, stating that the nature of the injuries suggests the young man was struck by a passing train. However, he emphasized that the exact cause of death will only be verified once the complete autopsy report is delivered. Railway police are currently checking missing person registers across the district to establish the identity of the deceased.
In a completely unrelated incident on the same afternoon, Sirajdikhan police recovered the body of 65-year-old Nurul Islam from the roadside in South Latabdi village. Islam, a resident of Chargulgolia village under the neighbouring Basail union, earned his living as a local battery-operated auto-rickshaw driver.
According to Inspector Mohammad Habibur Rahman, the head of investigations at the Sirajdikhan Police Station, Islam had been involved in a severe traffic collision earlier that day on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. The accident, which occurred near the Hasara area under Srinagar sub-district, left Islam critically injured and his vehicle completely mangled.
Investigating officers believe that following the crash, well-meaning bystanders or the parties involved in the collision loaded the severely injured driver into a vehicle under the pretext of rushing him to a nearby hospital. Detectives theorise that Islam tragically succumbed to his internal injuries en route. To evade legal complications and avoid questioning by the authorities, the occupants of the vehicle allegedly abandoned his body by the side of the road in South Latabdi before fleeing the scene. The body remains in police custody while traffic collision investigators liaise with Srinagar police to trace the vehicle responsible for the initial crash.
