The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has claimed a major breakthrough in unraveling the murder of 29-year-old gold trader Al-Amin Hossain in Jessore. Officers arrested one of the primary suspects, 30-year-old Golam Rasul, during a targeted early-morning raid on Wednesday, 26 August, in Gopalganj district.
The arrest took place at around dawn inside the residence of one Basu Sikdar, located in Puishur village under Ward 8 of Puishur Union in Gopalganj’s Kashiani Upazila. Following his detention, investigators confirmed that Golam Rasul formally admitted to his direct involvement in the violent killing during initial questioning.
The victim, Al-Amin Hossain, a resident of the Purba Barandipara Mathpara area in Jessore town, went missing on the afternoon of 20 August. At approximately 3:30 pm, he closed his shop in the town’s prominent Swarnapatti (gold market) hub and set off for home. He never arrived. Hours later, local residents discovered his bloody body lying inside a mahogany grove belonging to an individual named Babu, located behind the Lichutola Madrasa in Purba Barandipara.
Upon receiving the report, police rushed to the scene, recovered the body, and transferred it to the Jessore 250-Bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The victim’s mother subsequently filed a murder case with the Kotwali Model Police Station. Recognizing the gravity of the crime, the Jessore PBI unit officially took over the investigation.
Using advanced information technology, digital forensics, and local intelligence, PBI investigators uncovered a history of long-standing business and personal disputes between Al-Amin and a group led by Golam Rasul. The conflict had escalated in the weeks preceding the attack, eventually culminating in a premeditated plot to eliminate the young trader.
According to PBI officials, Golam Rasul and his accomplices placed multiple telephone calls to Al-Amin on the afternoon of the incident, luring him to the isolated mahogany grove behind the madrasa. Once he arrived, the group ambushed him, repeatedly stabbing him with knives and battering various parts of his body with heavy bricks. PBI officers stated that Golam Rasul admitted the victim died at the scene from excessive bleeding caused by the severe trauma.
Immediately after the murder, Golam Rasul fled the area, switched off his mobile phone, and went into hiding in Gopalganj. PBI officers tracked his movements by analysing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage recorded near the crime scene and mapping cellular tower locations.
Sub-Inspector Masud, the investigating officer, noted that Golam Rasul provided crucial leads during preliminary interrogation. The suspect was formally produced before a Jessore court on Wednesday, where investigators petitioned for remand custody to interrogate him further and recover the murder weapons.
Special Police Superintendent of PBI Jessore District, Md. Kamrujjaman, confirmed that lingering commercial and personal animosity directly motivated the crime. He added that police drives remain ongoing across multiple districts to track down and arrest the remaining accomplices implicated in the murder scheme.
