A group of protesting students demanding the resignation of Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon were stopped by police after attempting to march towards Bangladesh’s Ministry of Education in the capital on Tuesday.
The demonstrators, who began their procession from the University of Dhaka campus, reached the area in front of the Education Building at around 4:00 pm. Their march came to a halt when they encountered a police barricade that had been set up in advance to prevent them from moving further towards the ministry.
Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of students gathering outside the Education Building after being blocked by law enforcement officers. Unable to proceed, they remained at the site, where they continued their demonstration and chanted slogans in support of their demand for the education minister’s resignation.
The protest formed part of an ongoing movement centred on dissatisfaction with the leadership of the education sector. Organisers had announced a march towards the Ministry of Education as a peaceful programme intended to press home their demands. However, the heavy police presence around the government complex prevented the demonstrators from reaching their intended destination.
Witnesses reported that police officers maintained a line in front of the barricades while monitoring the crowd. Security measures appeared to have been strengthened around the Education Building and adjoining roads before the students arrived, reflecting the authorities’ efforts to restrict access to a key government installation during the demonstration.
Despite the tense atmosphere, there were no immediate reports of major clashes or violence between protesters and police at the time the students were stopped. The demonstrators remained gathered outside the barricades, continuing their protest while law enforcement personnel maintained their positions.
The Education Building houses important administrative offices responsible for the country’s education sector and is considered a sensitive government facility. As a result, additional security arrangements are commonly put in place whenever demonstrations are expected in the surrounding area.
As of the latest available information, the students continued their sit-in outside the Education Building after their march was halted. No official statement had been issued immediately regarding the protesters’ demand for the minister’s resignation or any further administrative response to the demonstration.
