A sudden protest march was organised by activists of the proscribed student organisation, Bangladesh Chhatra League, in the capital’s Hazaribagh area early on Thursday morning. The demonstration, marking “Gopalganj Genocide Day”, was arranged by the Dhaka district unit of the banned outfit. Around one hundred activists participated in the brief procession, which resulted in a prompt police response and the detention of two individuals from the spot.
Local sources revealed that the flash march commenced at approximately 6:00 am. It was reportedly organised under the direct instructions of Shaheen Ahmed, a central Awami League leader in charge of the Keraniganj and Kamrangirchar areas and the former Chairman of the Keraniganj Upazila Parishad. The procession on the ground was led by Masud Rana, the General Secretary of the Keraniganj Model Than Chhatra League. The participants chose the early hours of dawn to avoid immediate detection by law enforcement agencies.
Eyewitnesses stated that the group emerged on a local street in Hazaribagh holding a banner and chanting party slogans. The march lasted only a few minutes, with the majority of the protesters dispersing into narrow residential lanes before police patrolling units could reach the location. This quick, unannounced strategy has increasingly been used by activists of the banned organisation to register their presence whilst minimising the risk of mass arrests.
Mosharraf Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hazaribagh Police Station, confirmed the development. He stated that on receiving intelligence regarding an unauthorised demonstration by the banned group, police teams rushed to the scene. Officers managed to intercept and detain two individuals linked to the protest. The detainees are currently being held at the station, and the process of initiating formal legal actions against them is under way.
The police have heightened security measures and increased surveillance in the Hazaribagh and surrounding areas following the incident. Officers are reviewing available video footage of the march to identify other participants. The local administration has emphasised that any attempts to create instability or organise activities on behalf of a banned organisation will be met with strict law enforcement.
