Demra Police Constable Found Dead In Room, Probe Begins

A police constable was found hanging inside his room at the Demra Police Lines in the capital, with authorities launching an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Saidul Islam, son of Mohammad Sadeq from Lemuya Uttar Chandpur village in Feni Sadar upazila. Saidul had joined the Bangladesh Police as a constable only nine months ago.

According to police sources, Saidul was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his room at the Demra Police Lines building at around 11:30pm on Thursday. His body was reportedly wrapped with a bed sheet. Fellow police personnel later recovered him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where his condition deteriorated. He was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, but doctors declared him dead after examination.

Police have begun an investigation to establish the exact cause of death. An unnatural death case has been filed in connection with the incident, and officials said all possible aspects are being examined, including the possibility of any foul play.

Demra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Saifur Rahman Mirza said that the initial investigation had not yet revealed the precise reason behind Saidul’s death. He added that further inquiry was underway to uncover the circumstances that led to the incident.

Family members and colleagues told police that Saidul had reportedly been suffering from depression for some time. They said he had become withdrawn and was not communicating regularly with his colleagues. However, investigators have not yet confirmed whether he had any personal disputes or conflicts with anyone.

Police officials said they were treating the case seriously and were examining whether the death was a result of suicide or whether there was any involvement of another person. Evidence from the scene, statements from colleagues and family members, as well as the post-mortem report, are expected to play a key role in determining what happened.

Saidul’s uncle, Mohammad Sohag, said the young constable had been experiencing severe mental distress for several days. However, he said the family was still unaware of the exact circumstances behind his death.

The body has been kept at the mortuary of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Sub-Inspector Mohammad Selim of the hospital police outpost confirmed that the autopsy process would help provide further information regarding the cause of death.

Authorities said the investigation would continue until the facts surrounding the death of the young police officer are fully established.
