Kidnapped Faridpur Onion Merchant Found Murdered in Jute Field

A grim atmosphere has settled over the agrarian community of Rokman Khar Dangi village in Faridpur Sadar upazila, following the discovery of a local businessman’s body on Saturday morning. The victim, 45-year-old Yusuph Fakir, was found bound and lifeless in a local jute field, exactly two days after he mysteriously vanished from right outside his family home.

Distraught relatives have alleged that Yusuph was targeted by an organised gang who orchestrated his abduction and subsequently demanded a ransom of 30,000 Bangladeshi Taka (BDT). The family believes the captors summarily executed the father of three when the financial demands were not fulfilled.

Sudden Disappearance and the Extortion Call

The sequence of events began on Thursday afternoon. Yusuph Fakir, a respected wholesale onion merchant and the sole breadwinner for his wife, two daughters, and a son, complained of feeling unwell. He informed his wife that he was travelling to a dispensary at Mominkhar Hat Bazar to have his blood sugar monitored.

According to statements gathered by the police, Yusuph concluded his business at the market and chartered a local easy-bike to return home. The driver of the three-wheeler later confirmed to the family that he had safely dropped the merchant off directly in front of his rural residence at dusk. Crucially, Yusuph vanished in the brief moments between stepping off the vehicle and walking towards his front door.

Sensing that something was amiss when he failed to enter the house, family members attempted to call his mobile phone. The initial calls were repeatedly disconnected from the receiving end, and by 9:00 pm, the device was completely deactivated. Alarmed by the anomaly, the victim’s nephew, Saiful Fakir, visited the Faridpur Kotwali Police Station at 12:30 am on Friday to lodge an official General Diary (GD).

The family’s worst fears were validated on Friday afternoon. Yusuph’s mobile phone was used to place a call to his daughter’s handset. The abductors bluntly stated that they held the trader captive and demanded an immediate payment of BDT 30,000, promising that he would be released unharmed only if the money was delivered.

Discovery of the Crime Scene and Police Response

The search culminated in a tragic discovery at approximately 6:00 am on Saturday. A group of local agricultural labourers heading out to harvest crops noticed a body lying concealed amidst the tall stalks of a jute field, located a mere 300 metres from Yusuph’s house.

Md. Ali Maddin Fakir, a local representative serving as a member of Ward No. 4 of the Char Madhabdia Union Parishad, reported that the victim’s hands and feet had been securely bound with rope. Furthermore, there were distinct signs of chemical poisoning around the victim’s mouth, and an discarded container of agricultural pesticide was recovered adjacent to the body.

Officers from the Faridpur Kotwali Police Station arrived at the scene by 7:00 am to secure the perimeter and transport the body.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the station, Md. Mahmudul Hasan, confirmed that the body had been transferred to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

“Our investigative teams are scrutinising every available lead to uncover the motive behind this horrific crime,” stated OC Hasan. “We are exploring whether this was strictly an opportunistic kidnapping or if there are underlying disputes. The public will be updated with comprehensive details as soon as the perpetrators are identified and detained.”

Background Context: The Vulnerability of Rural Traders

This disturbing incident underscores the escalating security challenges faced by small-scale commercial traders operating within Bangladesh’s rural agricultural belts. Districts such as Faridpur serve as pivotal regional hubs for the wholesale distribution of essential commodities, particularly jute and onions. Because these wholesale transactions are traditionally conducted entirely in cash, local merchants frequently carry significant sums of money, rendering them highly visible targets for rural extortionists and opportunistic criminal networks.

Investigators are particularly perplexed by the relatively low ransom demand of BDT 30,000, which has led to speculation that the abduction may have been personal rather than purely financial. The calculated placement of a pesticide bottle at the scene also points to a deliberate attempt by the culprits to disguise the homicide or ensure fatal results. In the wake of the murder, community leaders have formally petitioned the local administration to increase police patrols across the Char Madhabdia sector to restore a sense of security among the terrified populace.
