Measles Death Toll Nears 800

Five more children have died from measles and suspected measles-related complications across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, as the country’s prolonged outbreak continues to place significant pressure on the healthcare system. During the same period, 1,069 children were admitted to hospitals after either testing positive for the disease or developing symptoms consistent with measles.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatalities bring the cumulative death toll since 15 March to 793. Of these, 95 deaths were confirmed among patients diagnosed with measles, while 698 occurred in children who displayed symptoms associated with the disease.

The DGHS released the latest figures in its routine measles situation report on Monday, 20 July. The report shows that Sylhet Division recorded the highest number of deaths over the past day, with three children dying after developing symptoms linked to measles. Dhaka and Chattogram divisions each reported one additional child death during the same period.

The outbreak has continued to spread across different parts of the country, with both confirmed infections and suspected cases remaining at a high level. Over the last 24 hours alone, health authorities confirmed 147 new measles infections through testing. At the same time, another 922 children developed symptoms consistent with the disease, highlighting the continued circulation of the virus and the challenges in containing its spread.

Since 15 March, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 14,578 laboratory-confirmed measles cases. During the same period, symptoms associated with the disease have been reported in 118,570 people nationwide, indicating that the number of suspected infections remains considerably higher than confirmed cases.

Hospital admissions also continue to rise. The latest report states that, from 15 March until Monday, a total of 101,026 patients suffering from measles or its symptoms have required hospital treatment. Encouragingly, most patients have recovered after receiving medical care. So far, 97,532 people have been discharged from hospitals following successful treatment, although thousands remain under medical observation or continue to receive care.

The latest figures underline the sustained burden the outbreak has placed on Bangladesh’s healthcare facilities. The continued rise in hospital admissions, suspected infections and child fatalities demonstrates that measles remains a major public health concern. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation through regular surveillance and reporting as hospitals manage a steady flow of new patients requiring treatment for confirmed infections and measles-related symptoms.
