A distinguished journalist, writer, editor, parliamentarian, and prominent children’s author, Maudud remains a symbol of unwavering commitment to truth, progressive thought, and humanitarian values. Early Life and Formative Years

Born on 23 June 1948 in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India, Baby Maudud was raised in an intellectually vibrant and culturally progressive household. She was the third child among nine siblings—six brothers and three sisters—born to Justice Abdul Maudud and Hedayetun Nesa. Her family shared a deep commitment to public service and legal scholarship; her elder brother, Marzi-ul Huq, would later serve as a judge of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

Her ancestral marital home was located in the Thakurgaon district. Throughout her academic years at the University of Dhaka, where she earned both her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Arts degrees in Bengali Language and Literature, Maudud was actively engaged in student politics and progressive cultural movements. It was during her university years that she forged a lifelong friendship with Sheikh Hasina, who would later become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Deeply influenced by the Bengali nationalist movement, the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War, non-communalism, and democratic ideals became the foundational pillars of her life’s work.

A Stellar Career in Journalism and Literature

Following the completion of her postgraduate studies, Baby Maudud embraced journalism as her lifelong vocation—a field then largely dominated by men. Over a career spanning several decades, she held pivotal editorial positions across leading national print outlets, Bangladesh Betar, and the BBC Bangla service. Notably, she served as the acting editor of the highly influential weekly magazine Saptahik Bichitra, where her incisive commentary frequently addressed social realities, women’s empowerment, and the preservation of historical truth.

Concurrently, Maudud carved out an enduring niche in children’s and young adult literature. Her lucid storytelling, accessible biographies, and educational essays were crafted with the firm belief that an enlightened, empathetic nation could only be built by fostering humanitarian values in early childhood development.

Personal Resilience and Political Service

Maudud’s personal journey was marked by extraordinary fortitude. Following the untimely demise of her husband, Advocate Md. Hasan Ali, she single-handedly raised her two children while managing a demanding professional and public life. Adverse circumstances never diminished her formidable work ethic or public engagement.

In her later years, she translated her advocacy for social justice into direct political action, serving as a Member of Parliament in the reserved seats for women. In the legislature, as in the newsroom, she remained an uncompromising voice for constitutional democracy and women’s rights.
