Tragic Suicide in Manikganj Follows Allegations of Extortion and Compromised Local Arbitration

A 28-year-old woman in Daulatpur, Manikganj district, has reportedly taken her own life after failing to receive justice at an informal village arbitration (salish) regarding severe allegations of sexual exploitation, blackmail, and financial extortion.

The victim, identified as Nashima Begum, was found dead early in the morning following a dispute with a influential neighbour. Her father, Md Abdul Haq, has subsequently filed a formal case with the Daulatpur Police Station, accusing the primary suspect and associated individuals of abetment to suicide.

Details of the Allegations

According to the First Information Report (FIR) submitted by the victim’s family, the ordeal began after Nashima’s husband migrated abroad for employment. Taking advantage of her vulnerable situation, a neighbouring youth, Shakil—the son of local spiritual figure Insan Peer from Taluknagar village—allegedly established an intimacy with her under the pretense of marriage.

The relationship reportedly escalated into systemic abuse and extortion. It is alleged that Shakil secretly recorded intimate videos of Nashima and subsequently used the footage to blackmail her, coercing her into handing over approximately BDT 200,000. When Nashima eventually demanded that Shakil fulfil his promise of marriage, he reportedly refused and subjected her to severe public humiliation.

The Role of the Village Salish

In many rural regions of Bangladesh, traditional informal court sessions, locally known as salish, are often convened by village elders and local elites to settle community disputes outside the formal judiciary. However, human rights activists frequently criticise these gatherings for lacking legal authority, exhibiting structural bias, and failing to protect vulnerable women in serious criminal matters such as sexual assault and extortion.

On 18 July, a community arbitration was convened at the residence of a local prominent figure, Dr Alamgir, to address Nashima’s complaint. The session was attended by local dignitaries and political figures, including Union Parishad Member Sharif Islam Lalon, alongside community elders named as Alek, Habel, Jolil, Shamsul, Robijjol, Surman, Alim, Anwar, Alam, and Sirajul.

Rather than offering recourse, the victim’s family asserts that the panel acted with extreme bias, shielding the accused due to his influential family background and placing the blame upon the victim. Nashima’s brother, Russel Miah, stated that his sister was deeply traumatised by the one-sided nature of the proceeding, which left her entirely devoid of hope or judicial support.

Discovery and Police Intervention

Early the morning following the biased arbitration, family members discovered Nashima’s body hanging from a structural beam near the kitchen of her homestead. Local police authorities were immediately notified, arrived at the scene to recover the body, and subsequently dispatched it to the Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for a official post-mortem examination.

Family members claim to possess further video evidence corroborating the suspect’s extortion demands and illicit recordings, though these files have yet to be independently verified by forensic experts.

Swapan Kumar Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station, confirmed that a criminal case has been registered regarding abetment to suicide. Law enforcement authorities have already arrested one individual connected to the case and produced them before the court. A thorough investigation remains ongoing to apprehend all remaining suspects and ascertain the full sequence of events.
