Ride-Sharing Motorcyclist Killed in Mirpur Bus Crash

A 30-year-old ride-sharing motorcyclist was killed after being struck by a passenger bus in the Shewrapara area of Mirpur, Dhaka, late on Saturday night. The victim, identified as Sabuj Rahman, sustained critical injuries in the collision and was later pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police have detained the bus driver and helper, while the vehicle involved in the crash has been seized as legal proceedings continue.

The accident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday (25 July) on the busy Shewrapara road in the capital. According to witnesses, Sabuj Rahman was travelling on his motorcycle when it was hit by a bus belonging to Himalaya Paribahan. The impact threw him onto the road, and one of the bus’s wheels reportedly ran over his hand. The force of the collision also shattered the helmet he was wearing, highlighting the severity of the crash.

Sabuj was rescued from the scene by passers-by and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite efforts to save his life, the attending physician declared him dead at approximately 12:30 a.m.

One of the rescuers, Sajib Khan, described how he came across the incident. He said he had mistakenly boarded an Alif Paribahan bus while returning home from work. After getting off at Shewrapara to catch another bus bound for Azimpur, he noticed a crowd gathered beside the road. When he approached, he found a seriously injured man sitting inside a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw, surrounded by local residents trying to assist him.

Speaking about what he learned at the scene, Sajib said local people informed him that the injured man was a ride-sharing motorcycle rider who had just been struck by a Himalaya Paribahan bus. Realising the seriousness of the injuries, he immediately helped transport Sabuj to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save him.

Witnesses also said that the bus involved in the collision was seized shortly after the incident. The driver and the bus helper were detained by the authorities, and the matter has since been handed over to the relevant police station for further investigation.

Sabuj Rahman’s family home is in Natabari village under Dimla Upazila of Nilphamari District. His father has been identified as Mashiur Rahman. He had been living in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, and earned his livelihood by providing ride-sharing services in the city.

Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death, citing the attending physician. He said the body had been kept in the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination and that the appropriate police station had been informed. Legal procedures relating to the fatal road accident are currently underway.

Fatal collisions involving buses and motorcycles remain a recurring concern on Dhaka’s busy roads, where heavy passenger vehicles and two-wheelers frequently share congested traffic corridors. Such incidents continue to underline the importance of road safety measures, responsible driving, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding this latest fatal crash.
