Legendary Maestro Bhupen Hazarika: A Timeless Voice of Humanity

Across the Indian subcontinent, few cultural figures have bridged geographical, linguistic, and political divides quite like Dr Bhupen Hazarika. Renowned for his deep baritone, poetic lyricism, and poignant melodies, Hazarika transformed music from a mere form of entertainment into a formidable instrument for social consciousness, human rights, and regional pride. Decades after his passing, his soul-stirring compositions continue to resonate deeply with audiences across generations.

Born on 8 September 1926 in Sadiya, Assam, Hazarika’s musical journey began early under the gentle guidance of his mother, whose traditional lullabies and Assamese folk tunes laid his creative foundation. By age ten, he was already captivating local audiences. At twelve, he made his formal debut in regional cinema by writing and singing two songs for the Assamese film *Indramalati* in 1939.

Hazarika’s intellectual pursuits matched his artistic brilliance. He completed his early academic degrees at Cotton College in Guwahati and Banaras Hindu University before moving to the United States to pursue higher education. In 1952, he earned a PhD in Mass Communication from Columbia University in New York.

His time in North America proved pivotal to his artistic evolution. During his stay, he struck up a close friendship with the celebrated African-American singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson. Robeson’s commitment to social justice profoundly reshaped Hazarika’s world view. Inspired by Robeson’s anti-racist anthem *Ol’ Man River*, Hazarika later adapted its spirit into his iconic composition *Bistirno Dupare* (and its Assamese version *Buitirno Parore*), using the majestic Brahmaputra River as a metaphor for societal apathy and human struggle.

Upon returning home, Hazarika aligned himself with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), championing songs that spoke directly to marginalized communities. His repertoire expanded rapidly, marked by timeless classics such as *Manuhe Manuhor Babe* (translated into Bengali as *Manush Manusher Jonno*), which remains an enduring anthem for universal brotherhood. Other masterpieces like *Moi Eti Jajabor* and *Gonga Mor Ma* further solidified his status as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra”.

Hazarika’s creative footprint extended far beyond Assam. He made immense contributions to Bengali and Hindi cinema as a composer and music director. In 1975, he earned the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the Assamese film *Chameli Memsaab*. Later, his collaboration with film-maker Kalpana Lajmi produced unforgettable soundtracks for critically acclaimed Hindi films, including *Ek Pal*, *Daman*, and *Rudaali*. The haunting ballad *Dil Hoom Hoom Kare* from *Rudaali* remains one of the most revered melodies in Indian cinematic history.

Throughout his illustrious career, Hazarika received numerous prestigious accolades. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1977, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1992, and the Padma Bhushan in 2001. In 2008, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. Posthumously, he was conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 2012 and India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2019. In recognition of his staunch cultural support during the 1971 Liberation War, the Government of Bangladesh honoured him with the Friends of Liberation War Honour in 2011.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika passed away on 5 November 2011 in Mumbai at the age of 85. Though the maestro is no longer with us, his legacy endures unbroken. His songs remain timeless bridges connecting peoples, languages, and shared human emotions.
