Woman Killed in Cumilla Land Clash as Police Detain Four

Police have detained four individuals in connection with a violent clash over the control of a riverine island (char) in Cumilla’s Titas Upazila that left a woman dead. The arrests were made during a overnight operation conducted on Sunday, 26 July, by officers from the Meghna Police Station in the village of Natun Bhaterarchar.

The detainees have been identified as Mainuddin, 40, Md Hannan, 26, Kashem Bepari, 60, and Md Rana, 21, all residents of Natun Bhaterarchar village under Titas Upazila.

The operation followed a deadly skirmish that erupted on Sunday afternoon between rival groups fighting for territorial control over disputed char land. Residents from Char Binodpur and Alipur villages in the neighboring Meghna Upazila engaged in a fierce fight using lethal spears and traditional weapons against villagers from Natun Bhaterarchar in Titas. The violent clash continued until Sunday evening, transforming the border zone between the two upazilas into a scene of chaotic warfare.

During the height of the confrontation, Kuhinur Akter, a 38-year-old resident of Char Binodpur village in Meghna Upazila, was struck in the throat by a spear. She died at the scene from her injuries.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Meghna Police Station, Shahidul Islam, stated that the violence stemmed directly from a dispute regarding the occupation of a riverine char. Following the killing of Kuhinur Akter, police launched a targeted raid in Natun Bhaterarchar village on Sunday night, securing the custody of the four suspects. Addressing questions regarding formal legal proceedings, the officer noted that a written complaint had not yet been formally submitted, though the victim’s family was in the process of drafting an official statement.

To prevent further escalation and maintain order across the border area, security measures have been heightened in both districts. Officer-in-Charge of Titas Police Station, Mamirul Haq, confirmed that fifteen police officers have been deployed to the Charbhatera area, where the situation has since returned to normal. Additional police personnel have also been stationed across the border section governed by Meghna Police Station to ensure continued calm.
