Measles-Related Death Toll Rises to 825 Across Bangladesh

Five more children have died with symptoms associated with measles across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths linked to confirmed measles and suspected measles cases since 15 March to 825.

The latest figures were released on Monday, 27 July, in the Directorate General of Health Services’ regular measles surveillance report. According to the report, no deaths from laboratory-confirmed measles were recorded during the latest 24-hour period. However, five children died after developing symptoms associated with the disease.

The health authorities also reported 1,105 new cases of measles or measles-like symptoms over the same period, indicating that the outbreak continues to place considerable pressure on the country’s health services.

Since 15 March, a total of 730 children have reportedly died after developing symptoms suspected to be related to measles, while another 95 children have died from confirmed measles infections. Taken together, the figures bring the overall number of deaths associated with confirmed measles and suspected measles symptoms to 825 during the period.

The scale of the outbreak is also reflected in the number of suspected and confirmed cases recorded nationwide. Health Directorate data show that 124,745 suspected measles cases have been reported since 15 March, while 15,555 cases have been confirmed as measles.

Hospitalisation figures indicate the extent of the burden on healthcare facilities. A total of 107,654 patients have been admitted to hospitals since the outbreak began. Of these, 103,467 patients have since recovered sufficiently to receive discharge and return home.

The continuing rise in deaths involving measles symptoms comes as health authorities monitor the spread of the disease and manage a large number of patients requiring medical attention. Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause serious complications, particularly among young children and those who are undernourished or have weakened immunity. Severe cases may lead to complications such as pneumonia, dehydration and inflammation of the brain.

The latest surveillance figures underline the importance of early detection, timely treatment of complications and sustained vaccination efforts. While there were no newly reported deaths from confirmed measles in the latest 24-hour reporting period, the number of deaths among children presenting with measles-like symptoms remains a major concern.

With more than 124,000 suspected cases recorded since mid-March and hospital admissions exceeding 107,000, the health authorities face the continuing challenge of containing transmission while ensuring that critically ill children receive prompt care. The latest figures also highlight the need for close monitoring of suspected cases so that severe complications can be identified and treated as early as possible.
