Dhaka University Mourns Passing of Esteemed Professor Deepti Saha

The academic community at the University of Dhaka is in mourning following the sudden death of Professor Dr Deepti Saha, who passed away on Friday morning at a hospital in the capital. She was 58 years old.

At the time of her passing, Professor Saha was serving as the 17th Departmental Head and Chairperson of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the university.

According to an official press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office, Professor Saha lost consciousness on Friday morning after food inadvertently blocked her airway during breakfast. She was rushed immediately to a nearby hospital in Dhaka, where attending physicians pronounced her dead upon arrival.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, expressed profound grief at the scholar’s untimely departure. In a formal condolence message, the Vice-Chancellor commended Professor Saha as a distinguished educator and researcher whose exceptional contributions to national education and scientific research would be remembered with deep respect. He offered prayers for the peace of her departed soul and extended heartfelt sympathies to her bereaved family.

To allow colleagues, faculty members, and students to pay their last respects, the late professor’s casket was brought to the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering on Friday afternoon. On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Acting Registrar laid a floral wreath on the coffin. The final rites and cremation ceremony were subsequently performed at the Postogola Crematorium.

Hailing from Hariyarpara in the Enayetnagar area of Narayanganj district, Professor Saha leaves behind her brothers, sisters, and a vast circle of students, colleagues, and well-wishers.

Joining in the widespread tributes, the Dhaka University Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Alumni Association issued a statement on Saturday, conveying deep sorrow and extending their condolences to the grieving family.
