Pentagon Warned US Must Choose Between Defending Israel or American Homeland

A senior United States military commander has issued a stark warning to the Pentagon, declaring that American armed forces may soon be forced to choose between intercepting aerial attacks on Israel and protecting the US homeland from strategic foreign threats. General Christopher Cavoli, head of US European Command (EUCOM), submitted a formal request for an additional US Navy destroyer, cautioning that existing military assets are stretched to a breaking point that endangers critical national defence commitments.

According to internal reports highlighted by The Washington Post, EUCOM’s leadership communicated that operating without an expanded fleet presents an unsustainable operational strain. Without additional maritime assets, commanders warned they would face an extraordinary dilemma: diverting crucial missile-defence cover away from European-based surveillance zones that protect the American mainland to maintain continuous ballistic and drone shields over Israel.

EUCOM oversees US operations across Europe and the Mediterranean basin. A major operational focus for American naval forces deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean has been intercepting ballistic missiles and long-range drones launched towards Israel by Iran and Tehran-backed Houthi forces operating out of Yemen.

Currently, EUCOM maintains five guided-missile destroyers homeported at Naval Station Rota in Spain. As of late last week, at least two of these vessels were actively deployed on high-readiness air-defence missions in the Mediterranean. However, this same command structure carries the vital mandate of deterring Russian military moves within NATO territory and maintaining early-warning, intercept-capable defenses against long-range Russian missiles capable of striking the continental United States.

Military analysts note that continuous high-intensity missile interceptions in the Middle East consume specialized munitions and keep warships locked into reactive defensive perimeters. This dynamic limits their availability for strategic surveillance and deterrence missions elsewhere.

When approached regarding the internal command warnings, representatives from the Pentagon declined to comment on specific force deployments. EUCOM officials similarly declined to elaborate on operational requests, while the Israeli Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.
