Tenth-Grader Beaten to Death While Mediating Football Pitch Dispute in Bogura

A 16-year-old high school student was killed in Bogura’s Sherpur upazila on Monday evening (3 August) after being attacked while attempting to mediate a feud that broke out during a local football match.

The victim, identified as Jamil Sheikh, was a 10th-grade student at the Rural Development Academy (RDA) Laboratory School and College. He was the son of Rafiqul Islam from the Sherua Dahapara village under the Shahbandegi Union.

According to local sources and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 6:30 pm at the Sherua Adarsha High School ground, where a friendly football match was taking place. A sudden argument erupted between players on the pitch, quickly causing tensions to flare.

When Jamil stepped in to de-escalate the altercation, an opponent identified as Shakil (22) launched a sudden, violent attack on him, delivering kicks and heavy punches. Jamil collapsed on the field with severe injuries. Local residents rushed him to the Sherpur Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead on arrival.

The accused, Shakil—son of Shafiqul Islam from the same village—works as a manager at a local rice mill (chatal). He absconded immediately following the assault, and law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to trace his whereabouts.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Police Station, S.M. Moinuddin, stated that police teams were deployed to both the crime scene and the health complex upon receiving information. He confirmed that the body would be handed over to the family following a forensic autopsy and the completion of necessary legal procedures, adding that strict legal action will be taken against the perpetrator upon arrest.
