Jamaat Activist Sent to Court After Alleged Incident in Satkhira

A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was taken into police custody after local residents allegedly found him in an objectionable situation inside a married woman’s home in Debhata upazila of Satkhira.

The man, identified as 40-year-old Shariful Islam Moral, was detained by residents following the incident at Townshripur village at around 9.30pm on Monday, 3 August. Police later arrived at the scene and took him into custody. On Tuesday morning, 4 August, police filed a case against him and produced him before a court.

According to local sources, Shariful Islam, the son of Mozammel Moral of neighbouring Azizpur village, was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with the woman. Residents reportedly became suspicious after he entered her home on Monday night. They then surrounded the house and, according to their account, broke open the door before finding the two inside in an objectionable situation.

The residents subsequently detained both individuals for several hours. Police were informed of the incident and arrived at the location later that night, taking Shariful Islam to the police station. The woman’s identity has not been disclosed.

A video purportedly showing the aftermath of the incident also circulated on social media on Monday night. The video quickly attracted attention in the locality, prompting discussion and criticism among residents. However, the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the recording have not been independently verified.

Bablu Rahman, a local union parishad member, confirmed that residents had detained the two individuals until late at night. He said Shariful Islam was locally known as an active worker of Jamaat-e-Islami and had reportedly held an organisational position at ward level.

Abdus Salam Master, president of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ward No. 7 in Debhata Union, said Shariful Islam was an active member of the organisation. He said he had not initially been aware of the incident and learned about it later through local people. The organisation would verify the allegations and take any necessary organisational action based on the findings, he added.

Debhata Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rezaul Karim said officers went to the area after receiving information that a man had been detained over allegations of immoral conduct. Police subsequently took him into custody, filed a case and sent him to court.

The incident comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the conduct of political activists and leaders, particularly when allegations involving private or personal behaviour become widely circulated on social media. In such cases, police investigations and court proceedings remain important for establishing the facts, while allegations should be distinguished from proven wrongdoing.

The latest incident also follows a separate controversy involving a video that circulated on social media and led to the expulsion of Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Satkhira-4 constituency MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party. The two incidents are separate, and no direct connection between them has been established.
