Three Family Members Found Dead in Bagerhat Home

Three members of the same family have been found dead inside a house in Kachua upazila of Bagerhat, in an incident that has sparked widespread alarm in the local community. Police suspect the deaths may have resulted from a planned killing, although the exact circumstances and motive remain unclear. Investigators say the cause of death will be established more conclusively after forensic examination and post-mortem reports are received.

The bodies were recovered on Tuesday (4 August) from a house in West Chanderkola village under Rarhipara Union of Kachua upazila. The deceased have been identified as Ahad Howlader, 22, son of Abdar Howlader; Monira Begum, 55, daughter of the late Rashid Sheikh; and Rashida Begum, 85, Monira’s wife.

According to local residents, a strong and persistent foul smell had been coming from the house for several days. Initially, neighbours became suspicious but were unable to determine what had happened inside. As the odour intensified, they informed the police, who subsequently went to the property and recovered the decomposed bodies of the three victims.

Police said the condition of the bodies indicated that the deaths had occurred several days before they were discovered. As the bodies remained inside the house for an extended period, decomposition had set in, causing the severe smell that eventually alerted residents.

The discovery has raised a number of unanswered questions about what happened to the three people and why their deaths went unnoticed for several days. Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding their final days, including their family and social relationships, recent communications and any disputes or conflicts they may have had with others.

After preparing the inquest reports, police began arrangements to send the bodies for post-mortem examinations. Investigators are also examining the condition of the house and its surroundings, looking for possible evidence that could help reconstruct the sequence of events. Any relevant forensic clues and other potential evidence are expected to play a key role in determining whether the deaths were indeed the result of a criminal act.

Senior police officials also visited the scene after news of the deaths spread through West Chanderkola and neighbouring areas. A large number of curious and concerned residents gathered near the house, reflecting the shock caused by the unusual discovery.

Police have stressed that the suspicion of a planned killing remains preliminary. No individual has been formally held responsible at this stage, and investigators have not reached a definitive conclusion about the motive. Possible explanations, including personal disputes, property-related disagreements or other forms of conflict, are being examined as part of the investigation.

Mahmud Hasan, investigation officer at Kachua Police Station, said neighbours had alerted police after noticing the strong smell coming from the house for several days. Officers then entered the premises and recovered the decomposed bodies of the three family members. He said investigators initially suspected that the incident could be a planned killing, but the precise cause of death would only become clear after the post-mortem examination.

The investigation is continuing to determine when and how the three victims died and whether anyone else was involved. Police are also working to identify any suspects and take legal action based on evidence gathered during the inquiry. The post-mortem findings, together with forensic evidence and other information collected at the scene, are expected to help establish the circumstances of the deaths and guide further legal proceedings.
