A Dhaka court has issued a travel ban on Padma Bank’s Executive Vice President M Khaled and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) Md Shariful Islam, both close associates of the bank’s former chairman, Chowdhury Nafiz Sarafat.
Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court passed the order following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the ACC’s petition, Nafiz Sarafat allegedly amassed a large sum of money through bribery, manipulation, abuse of power, and fraudulent activities involving Padma Bank’s customers. The petition further stated that Sarafat has siphoned off funds abroad and is currently residing overseas.
The ACC argued that Khaled and Shariful have been managing Sarafat’s interests in Bangladesh in his absence. To facilitate the ongoing investigation against him, the commission stressed the need to prevent them from leaving the country, prompting the court’s decision.
