Despite an explicit judicial ban and stern warnings from state authorities, millions of viewers across Bangladesh and abroad tuned into online streaming platforms to watch a live virtual address delivered by deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The virtual press conference, organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club (FCC) South Asia in New Delhi, was broadcast live across multiple Facebook pages and digital outlets on Wednesday, 5th August, attracting unprecedented digital engagement.
The massive online turnout directly challenged the government’s regulatory stance. Only a day prior, Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting, issued a strict directive during a press briefing at the Secretariat in Dhaka. He warned that broadcasting, re-broadcasting, or circulating any statement by Sheikh Hasina across mainstream television networks or online platforms would constitute a direct violation of court orders and trigger swift legal action. Consequently, traditional Bangladeshi media houses refrained from live coverage. However, the restrictions proved virtually ineffective against digital social networks, where the broadcast circulated rapidly.
A breakdown of engagement metrics recorded across primary Facebook pages and channels up to 10:00 pm on Wednesday demonstrates the massive reach of the virtual stream:
| Platform / Page Name | Total Views | Reactions | Comments | Shares |
| FCC South Asia | 5.2 Million | 174,000 | 392,000 | 65,700 |
| Bangladesh Awami League (Official Page) | 4.1 Million | 194,000 | 180,000 | 31,100 |
| Sajeeb Wazed Joy | 5.8 Million | 265,000 | 200,000 | 43,600 |
| Shakib Al Hasan | 8.0 Million | 367,000 | 169,000 | 33,900 |
| Bangladesh Chhatra League (Primary Page) | 877,000 | 49,000 | 28,600 | 7,800 |
| Bangladesh Chhatra League (Secondary Page) | 409,000 | 32,000 | 21,200 | 2,900 |
| Reuters | 1.8 Million | 69,000 | 40,800 | 13,300 |
| Awami League Digital Outlets (Combined Secondary) | 3.2 Million | 145,000 | 112,000 | 24,500 |
| Regional News Aggregators (Combined Streams) | 2.6 Million | 98,000 | 85,000 | 18,200 |
| Diaspora Community Groups (Combined Streams) | 1.9 Million | 81,000 | 64,000 | 12,100 |
Political analysts view the immense viewership as a significant indicator of the current political climate in Bangladesh. The willingness of millions to circumvent government advisories to access the live stream underscores Sheikh Hasina’s enduring political influence and deep public interest in her statements from exile, posing a fresh challenge to state efforts aimed at controlling political narratives in the digital sphere.
