Goalando Jubo League Leader Fatally Stabbed Over Financial Dispute

GOALANDO, RAJBARI — A local youth leader was fatally stabbed on Saturday morning near the Goalando Bazar railway track in Rajbari district, following an escalating financial dispute with an acquaintance over unpaid debts.

The victim, 40-year-old Shariful Islam (also known as Hira), was the deputy publication secretary of the Goalando Poura Jubo League and a resident of the Kazipara neighborhood in Goalando municipality. Sheikh Sohel, president of the local Jubo League unit, confirmed his party identity and untimely death.

Police have taken the primary suspect, 35-year-old Kamrul Fakir, into custody following a swift search operation. Officers intercepted Kamrul near the Kumrakandi railway bridge at around noon, roughly two hours after the incident took place.

A Desperate Plea and Fatal Injuries

The attack occurred around 10:00 am near the Torayer More intersection alongside the railway tracks. According to the victim’s wife, Shamsunnahar Mukta, she rushed to the scene after hearing commotion and found her husband collapsed on the ground with a knife embedded deeply in his chest.

In his final moments, a severely injured Shariful desperately pleaded with his wife to pull the weapon from his chest. With the assistance of nearby residents, the knife was extracted, and Shariful was rushed to the Goalando Upazila Health Complex. Attending medical staff declared him dead upon arrival.

Origins of the Conflict

Family members and local residents indicated that the fatal altercation stemmed from a debt incurred two months ago, when Shariful borrowed ৳6,000 from Kamrul. Although Shariful had repaid a portion of the loan in instalments, tension persisted between the two men over the outstanding balance.

According to Robin Nurtaj, a local schoolteacher and the victim’s uncle, Kamrul confronted Shariful shortly after he left his residence on Saturday morning. An argument quickly broke out over the remaining money, escalating into a physical tussle before Kamrul allegedly drew a sharp knife and plunged it into Shariful’s chest. The assailant then fled the scene.

Police Investigation and Local Claims

Officers from the Goalando Ghat Police Station, alongside Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Shahidul Islam, inspected the crime scene shortly after the incident was reported.

Local residents claimed that the stretch of railway line between Torayer More and the Kumrakandi bridge is a known hotspot for illegal narcotics dealing. Some community members alleged that both the victim and the suspect were associated with drug trade networks and suggested that the dispute might have involved the division of drug proceeds alongside the personal loan.

Goalando Ghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sofiqul Islam confirmed that the body has been sent to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, while preparations to file a murder case are underway.

Addressing the community claims, the officer noted that preliminary evidence strongly points to a personal financial dispute over borrowed money as the primary trigger. However, investigators are actively examining whether illicit drug transactions played a role in the killing, with full details expected to emerge as the formal police inquiry progresses.
