Google to Retire Gmail ‘Send As’ and External Mail Integration

Google to Retire Gmail ‘Send As’ and External Mail Integration

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Tech giant Google has announced plans to phase out its long-standing ‘Send As’ feature for personal Gmail accounts, alongside several other legacy features that allowed users to integrate third-party email providers directly into the Gmail web platform.

Under the upcoming changes, individual Gmail users will no longer be able to route outgoing messages through alternative email addresses such as Yahoo, Outlook, Hotmail, or custom personal domains from within their main Gmail interface. The feature is being restricted immediately for new users, whilst current subscribers utilizing the functionality will lose access starting January next year.

Phasing Out POP Fetching and Gmailify Services

The restriction of the ‘Send As’ feature forms part of a broader overhaul of Gmail’s external account integration tools. Google is also discontinuing ‘Gmailify’, a service that allowed users to apply Gmail’s proprietary features—including automated spam protection, inbox organisation, and smart categorisation—to non-Google email addresses.

Additionally, the company is terminating its web-based Post Office Protocol (POP) retrieval tool for third-party email accounts. Historically, POP fetching enabled users to consolidate their incoming messages by pulling emails from external servers directly into their primary Gmail inbox.

Google is rolling out these modifications in structured phases:

  • Send As (Existing Users): Current users may continue utilizing the feature until January 2027, after which outgoing routing through third-party domains will cease completely.

  • Send As (New Users): Access to configure new third-party send-as addresses has been disabled immediately across standard accounts.

  • POP Fetching & Gmailify (Existing Users): Active configurations will remain functional through January 2027 before complete deprecation.

  • POP Fetching & Gmailify (New Users): Setup options for new third-party integrations have been officially closed.

  • Historic Imports: All previously imported emails and archived messages will remain permanently stored within users’ Gmail accounts without loss of data.

  • Mobile App Continuity: The standalone Gmail application on Android, iPhone, and iPad will continue to support multi-account management, allowing users to view incoming messages from third-party inboxes separately.

Security Rationale and Impact on Users

Google clarified that Workspace accounts—designed for corporate and enterprise clients—will remain unaffected by this transition. Furthermore, using ‘Send As’ to route messages via secondary Gmail aliases within the Google ecosystem will continue to be fully supported.

The decision to streamline these integration features is largely driven by evolving cybersecurity standards and protocol updates. Supporting external POP and SMTP routing often requires storing third-party account credentials or granting broad authentication permissions, which can introduce security vulnerabilities and privacy risks.

While users will no longer be able to manage external accounts directly through the Gmail web environment, the third-party email services themselves remain fully operational. Individuals can continue accessing Yahoo, Outlook, and other providers through their respective official web portals or dedicated application software. Google has nevertheless urged users to exercise caution if considering alternative third-party aggregation tools, warning against sharing sensitive account passwords or granting unrestrained access to external integration platforms.
