Three Killed as Truck Crashes into Broken-Down Vehicle

Three people, including a father and his teenage son, were killed when a moving truck crashed into another lorry that had broken down and was parked on the Dhaka-Bogura Highway in Bogura on Sunday morning.

The accident occurred at around 7.30am in the Chhilimpur area of the city, in front of the Palli Bidyut office on the flyover road. The collision involved two trucks, with the force of the impact leaving the front section of the moving vehicle badly crushed.

The deceased have been identified as Tapas Sarkar, 35, son of Ananda Sarkar of Ramchandrapur village in Sherpur upazila, and his son Tibra Sarkar, 18. The identity of the third victim had not been established immediately after the accident.

Another man, Nur Islam, from Birampur in Dinajpur, was injured in the crash. He was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where he was admitted for treatment.

According to local residents and police, a Dhaka-bound truck developed a wheel problem in front of the Palli Bidyut office early in the morning. The driver and his assistant stopped the vehicle by the roadside and began working on the damaged wheel.

Tapas and his son Tibra were reportedly helping with the repair after being called to assist with changing the wheel. At about 7.30am, another truck travelling towards Rangpur approached the area at speed. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the stationary truck from behind.

The impact struck the area where the wheel was being repaired. Tapas and Tibra were killed at the scene, while the collision also claimed the life of another person. The front portion of the moving truck was severely mangled in the crash.

Nayan Ray, Tapas’s brother-in-law, said the wheel of the stationary truck had failed and Tapas had asked his son to bring a spare wheel. The two were working together when the approaching truck crashed into them.

Fire service personnel were called to the scene shortly after the accident. Bogura Fire Service Senior Station Officer Shahidul Islam said rescuers faced difficulties because the truck’s cabin had been extensively crushed and had collapsed inwards. Fire service workers eventually recovered two bodies from the wreckage.

Police also arrived at the scene and began an investigation. Sub-Inspector Munzur Morshed of Bogura Sadar Police Station said the crash caused temporary congestion on the highway. Police and fire service personnel removed the damaged vehicles and debris from the road, allowing traffic to resume normally.

The authorities are continuing efforts to establish the identity of the third victim. Police said the bodies would be handed over to the families after completion of the necessary legal procedures.

The accident has once again highlighted the risks faced by drivers, passengers and roadside workers when heavy vehicles are forced to stop on busy highways for mechanical repairs. A stationary truck can become particularly hazardous when adequate warning measures, visibility and a safe clearance from moving traffic are not maintained.
