Fire Erupts in Shyamoli, Brought Under Control After 40 Minutes

A fire broke out in several tin-roofed residential structures in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area on Thursday afternoon, prompting a response from the Fire Service and Civil Defence. The blaze was brought under control after about 40 minutes of firefighting, with no casualties reported so far.

The incident occurred on Road No. 3 in Shyamoli, in an area beyond Dhaka Udyan. According to the Fire Service control room, they received information about the fire at around 3.15pm on Thursday, 13 August.

Two units from the Mohammadpur Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after the alert was received. Firefighters began tackling the flames shortly after arriving, while local residents also assisted in the initial response.

The fire was brought under control at around 4.10pm following sustained efforts by the two Fire Service units. Officials said the intensity and spread of the blaze did not require additional firefighting units to be deployed.

Fire Service Inspector Anwarul Islam told the media that two units had worked to contain the fire. He said there was no need for further units based on an assessment of the situation at the scene.

The affected structures were mainly tin-roofed residential homes, which can allow flames to spread rapidly when combustible materials are present. In densely populated parts of the capital, such fires can also pose an immediate risk to nearby homes and residents because of the close proximity of structures and limited access for emergency vehicles.

The authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire. The extent of damage to the homes and belongings inside them was also not immediately available. Fire Service officials said no deaths or injuries had been reported in connection with the incident at the time of their latest assessment.

The cause of the fire and the total financial loss are expected to become clearer after a detailed assessment of the affected area. Officials may also examine whether an electrical fault, cooking-related incident or another source was responsible, although no specific cause has been established at this stage.

The incident once again highlights the challenges of responding to fires in densely settled residential areas of Dhaka, where closely packed structures can make it difficult for emergency crews to reach the source of a blaze quickly. Rapid reporting by residents and an early firefighting response can play a crucial role in preventing such fires from spreading to neighbouring properties.

For now, the fire has been brought under control and there have been no reported casualties. Further details on the cause of the incident and the extent of property damage are expected once the authorities complete their assessment.
