ISTANBUL, February 23, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to visit Turkey on Monday, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.
During his visit, Lavrov will engage in talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara. The two diplomats are expected to focus on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with discussions likely touching upon Russia’s military actions, regional security, and the broader implications of the war.
The visit comes at a critical moment, as the Ukraine war continues to dominate international attention, especially given the anniversary of Russia’s invasion. Turkey, which has maintained a complex relationship with both Russia and Ukraine, is seen as a key diplomatic player in the conflict, balancing its ties with both sides while striving for a peaceful resolution.
In addition to the war in Ukraine, energy issues, trade relations, and regional stability are also expected to be on the agenda. Turkey has played a significant role in mediating various aspects of the conflict, such as facilitating grain exports from Ukraine and maintaining diplomatic communication with Russia.
As the war in Ukraine has continued, Turkey has positioned itself as a bridge between Russia and the West. While Turkey has condemned Russia’s invasion and supported Ukrainian sovereignty, it has also maintained critical economic and energy ties with Moscow. This diplomatic balancing act has made Turkey an essential mediator in peace talks and ceasefire negotiations.
Lavrov’s visit reflects the importance of ongoing dialogue between Russia and Turkey, especially as both nations navigate the evolving geopolitical landscape amidst the conflict in Ukraine.
As the situation continues to evolve, the discussions between Lavrov and Fidan will be closely watched for any signs of diplomatic breakthroughs or shifts in stance.
