In a televised address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day and ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today called for a nationwide social movement to confront misogyny and systemic discrimination against women.

“We must identify the existing inequalities in the country and work together to prevent violence and discrimination against women,” Prof Yunus said, urging citizens and institutions to take a stand against entrenched gender biases.

Praising the role of technology in driving social change, he said, “Technology has given people immense power to dismantle obstacles, no matter how high or strong they are.” He emphasized that digital tools can be powerful weapons in the fight for justice and equality.

Prof Yunus also commended the courage of women who took part in the July uprising, noting that their determination to secure their rights sent a strong message about women’s growing role in shaping the nation’s future.

In a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening protections for women and children, the chief adviser announced several government measures, including a new police hotline and short-code service dedicated to women’s safety. The call center will be staffed entirely by women to create a more supportive environment for victims reporting abuse.

Amendments were made to the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act to speed up investigations and trials, he added.

He further said that new DNA testing laboratories are being established in Chattogram and Rajshahi, in addition to Dhaka, to bolster forensic capabilities in assault cases.

To address the backlog of gender-based violence cases, a special judicial service commission will soon appoint more judges, Prof Yunus said. Additionally, special tribunals are being set up to ensure swift justice, particularly for child victims.
