Law enforcement officers in Chapainawabganj have arrested Abdul Kader, the former chairman of Nachol Upazila Council and general secretary of the local Awami League unit. The police conducted a late-night operation on Friday, raiding his residence in the Bailkapara area of Kasba Union under Nachol Upazila to apprehend him.
Sukomal Chandra Debnath, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nachol Police Station, confirmed the arrest on Saturday morning. He explained that a specialised police team launched the targeted operation late on Friday night following a specific intelligence tip-off regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. The forces surrounded the property quickly to prevent any attempt at escape before taking him into custody.
The police chief stated that Abdul Kader was wanted in connection with an existing case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. He has been formally shown arrested in that specific case. Law enforcement authorities are currently completing the necessary legal procedures to produce the former upazila chairman before the court on Saturday afternoon.
Police records reveal that this is not the first time the politician has faced legal trouble. On 3 November 2024, Abdul Kader surrendered before a local court in connection with an extortion case. During that hearing, the magistrate rejected his bail application and remanded him to judicial custody. Although he subsequently secured bail from a higher court and was released from prison, he swiftly went into hiding to evade further police scrutiny amidst shifting local political dynamics.
Abdul Kader has been a prominent figure in regional politics, having served as the general secretary of the Nachol Upazila Awami League for a considerable period alongside his tenure as the elected chairman of the upazila council. However, his political activities came to a halt following multiple criminal charges and mounting legal proceedings.
Police officials indicated that drive against suspects involved in ongoing cases will continue to maintain law and order across the region. Investigators are also verifying whether Abdul Kader is named in any additional cases across other police stations in the district before proceeding with further legal actions.
