Indian Soldier and Three Suspected Rebels Killed in Kashmir Clashes

SRINAGAR, India, 12 April 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Three suspected militants and one Indian soldier were killed in separate armed engagements near the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto frontier dividing Indian-administered Kashmir from Pakistan, according to the Indian Army.

Ongoing Tensions in Kashmir: Latest Developments

The Indian Army confirmed on Saturday that three armed fighters were killed in an encounter that began on Wednesday in the remote forested region of Kishtwar, in southern Jammu and Kashmir. According to senior military officials, the clash was the result of a prolonged anti-infiltration operation.

Brigadier JBS Rathi praised his troops’ “great tactical acumen” and confirmed that “three terrorists were neutralised”, using the official term for armed separatists in the region.

The army’s White Knight Corps stated that a cache of weapons and “war-like stores” had been recovered from the site following the firefight.

Casualties and Clashes at the LoC

In a separate incident, a soldier lost his life late on Friday night in the Sunderbani sector, also near the LoC, during an operation aimed at preventing infiltration attempts. The army reported that troops had “foiled an infiltration bid”, underscoring the ongoing threat of cross-border incursions.

Since August 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government revoked Article 370, removing Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status, direct control from New Delhi has been imposed. This move was accompanied by a significant troop surge across the valley and the southern mountain belts, particularly in rebel-dense areas.

While overall violence has declined since the policy shift, deadly skirmishes persist, especially in strategic and mountainous regions near the LoC.

India consistently accuses Pakistan of supporting and sending militants across the LoC to destabilise Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan, however, denies direct involvement, asserting that it merely supports Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, a stance that resonates with parts of the local population in the region.
