Bangladesh’s local currency, the Taka, has shown signs of firming up against the US dollar following a period of regulatory adjustments and currency devaluations. The movement comes as the nation’s international trade footprint expands in tandem with global economic trends, prompting fluctuating exchange rates across key foreign currencies.
Recent financial market data reveals that the US dollar is trading at 122.70 Taka in the interbank market today, 21 September 2026. This marks a noticeable decline from the recent high of 123.82 Taka recorded earlier this quarter. In early July, the interbank dollar rate had remained stable around the 122.85 Taka mark before experiencing upward pressure.
The temporary surge in the dollar’s value and the subsequent depreciation of the Taka were largely driven by policy measures aligned with conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Despite adequate foreign currency liquidity within the banking system, the central bank permitted incremental rate adjustments to fulfil structural benchmark targets. However, the exchange rate has since adjusted downwards as supply conditions improved.
Financial analysts attribute this stabilization to stringent monitoring by Bangladesh Bank alongside a steady influx of foreign remittances from non-resident Bangladeshis. Increased remittance inflows have significantly bridged the historical price gap between the official interbank exchange rate and the kerb market.
