BNP MP Aynul Haq Alleges Attack by Opposition Supporters in Sirajganj

Political tensions flared in Sirajganj on Saturday afternoon after Aynul Haq, the Member of Parliament representing the Sirajganj-3 constituency, came under attack in the Dhangara area. The legislator from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which holds office as the ruling party, was targeted by individuals throwing bricks and stones. While Haq escaped physical injury, his personal vehicle sustained considerable damage during the sudden surge of violence.

The incident unfolded during the late afternoon hours of 15 August as the lawmaker was present in Dhangara. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of assailants began hurling projectiles directly towards Haq, creating immediate chaos. Sensing the rapid escalation of danger, the MP boarded his vehicle to depart the scene quickly. However, the perpetrators continued to throw heavy stones at the retreating car, damaging its bodywork.

Shortly after the incident, MP Aynul Haq released a video message expressing deep concern over public safety and political stability in the region. He remarked that despite being a Member of Parliament representing the ruling party, he felt unsafe, asserting that the lives and property of citizens remained vulnerable. Haq directly attributed the assault to members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.

In the aftermath of the attack, local BNP leaders and activists took to the streets in protest, conducting demonstrations and demanding swift legal action against the perpetrators. The incident has heightened political friction across the Rayganj, Tarash, and Solonga areas that make up the constituency.

Police authorities confirmed that an altercation had occurred between two opposing groups in Dhangara. Saiful Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Rayganj Circle, stated that law enforcement officers responded promptly to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. Police maintain an active presence to keep order in the area. The police official added that no formal written complaint or case had been lodged by any party by Saturday evening, though an official investigation would commence as soon as a formal complaint is submitted.
