Four Students Injured in Hand Grenade Explosion at Madaripur Madrasa

Four young female students sustained injuries on Saturday morning following a hand bomb explosion on the premises of Gopalphur Darussunnah Mahila Madrasa, located within the Kalkini municipal area of Madaripur district. The incident occurred suddenly outside an adjacent residential structure, sparking immediate concern among local residents and prompting a swift police response.

The explosion transpired during the early hours of 15 August when a crude bomb detonated right in front of the residence of local resident Emon Sardar, which sits immediately adjacent to the religious institution. The force of the blast and flying debris hit several young girls attending the madrasa. The injured children have been identified as Abida, aged eight, Jannat, nine, Minha, ten, and Maimuna, nine. Local residents and institution staff rushed to their aid, swiftly conveying the injured students to the Kalkini Upazila Health Complex and the Madaripur District Sadar Hospital for medical treatment.

Uncertainty remains regarding how the explosive device ended up on the residential and educational compound. Emon Sardar stated that he had no knowledge of how the bomb came to be positioned outside his home or who might have left it there. Similarly, the head of the institution, Hafijur Rahman, confirmed the suddenness of the explosion, noting that the blast occurred without warning and left four of their students wounded.

Upon receiving news of the detonation, a team from the Kalkini Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Zahirul Alam, arrived to inspect the site and secure the surrounding area. Law enforcement officers gathered evidence from the scene of the blast to determine the exact origin and composition of the crude device.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge Md. Zahirul Alam stated that police personnel visited the location immediately after being alerted to the blast. He added that a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to ascertain how the hand bomb reached the madrasa premises, identify those responsible for leaving or detonating the explosive, and determine the broader circumstances surrounding the threat to the educational facility. Law enforcement agencies maintain an active presence in the area as enquiries continue.
