DHAKA, 6 July 2025 – The body of Amzad Hossain (50), a former general secretary of the Jubo Dal’s Nawabganj Upazila unit, was recovered from a field near his home in the Majhirkanda area of Nawabganj early Sunday morning—just an hour after police launched a pre-dawn raid at his residence to arrest him.
According to police and local sources, officers from Nawabganj Police Station arrived at Amzad’s house around 4:00 am with a warrant related to a one-year sentence issued in a cheque fraud case. Unable to locate him, the police departed.
Family members believe Amzad stepped outside shortly after the police left, possibly on his way to the mosque for Fajr (dawn) prayers. Around 5:00 am, local residents spotted his body lying near a leafy field adjacent to the house and alerted his family.
He was rushed to Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The body was later taken back home by grieving family members. News of the incident spread rapidly on social media, with many posts suggesting foul play.
Jubo Dal activists, local residents, and relatives quickly gathered at Amzad’s residence, demanding answers and expressing outrage.
Police have since confirmed that Amzad had over 20 cases registered against him, including several politically motivated ones. He also had an active arrest warrant tied to a cheque fraud conviction.
Law enforcement conducted a preliminary examination of the body and later sent it to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for post-mortem examination. Officers stated that a full investigation would depend on the autopsy findings.
Family Demands Justice
Speaking to reporters, Amzad’s wife, Mahfuza Begum, said tearfully, “I don’t know how my husband died. I seek justice from Allah.”
His brother Zahidul Islam added, “My brother was involved in politics. He had many rivals. Even if the police came to arrest him, why was his body later found near the field? We cannot understand this.”
His eldest daughter, Asha Akter, noted, “There were injury marks on my father’s face and near his eyes. We’re not sure yet whether he was murdered, but the circumstances are suspicious.”
Police Response
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nawabganj Police Station, Mominul Islam, said, “To determine the cause of death, a post-mortem is essential. Only the report will reveal whether foul play was involved.”
Regarding the attempted arrest, the OC stated that police did indeed go to arrest Amzad at 4:00 am based on a court warrant. “As no one opened the door, our team returned. Shortly afterwards, we received a call from locals informing us of his death.”
Sub-Inspectors Rajibul Islam and Delowar Hossain, who were part of the police team, claimed they never entered the premises during the raid.
Political Fallout
BNP leader Mehnaz Mannan visited the grieving family and offered condolences. “Amzad was a dedicated leader of our party and endured numerous cases and harassment. His sudden and mysterious death is deeply concerning. We want the truth to come to light,” she told reporters.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and political tension, with calls growing for an impartial and transparent investigation.
