Bangladesh is set to experience a prolonged spell of rain over the next five days, with showers and thunderstorms forecast across several parts of the country from Thursday through Monday. The weather may turn particularly wet in some northern, north-eastern and southern regions, where moderate to heavy rainfall is expected at times.
According to the latest forecast, a well-marked low-pressure area that had been positioned over Jharkhand and adjoining parts of Bihar has moved towards north-eastern Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring areas. The system is expected to gradually weaken and may merge with the axis of the monsoon.
The extended axis of the monsoon trough currently stretches from Rajasthan through Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, passing near the centre of the well-marked low-pressure area, then across Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal and central Bangladesh towards Assam. The monsoon remains fairly active over Bangladesh, while conditions over the northern Bay of Bengal are expected to remain moderately active.
The combination of these weather systems is likely to keep rainfall activity going across the country, although the intensity and coverage of rain will vary from one division to another.
On Thursday, during the 24 hours from 9am, many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, accompanied at times by temporary gusty winds. Some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may also experience similar conditions. Moderate to heavy and very heavy rainfall is possible in places across Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet. Daytime and night-time temperatures may rise slightly nationwide.
On Friday, rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty winds are expected in many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions. Some parts of Dhaka, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may also see showers. Moderate to heavy or very heavy rainfall could occur in places across the country. Temperatures during both day and night may fall slightly.
The unsettled conditions are expected to continue on Saturday. Many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, while some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions may also experience showers. Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in places. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged, while night-time temperatures may increase slightly.
On Sunday, the focus of rainfall is expected to shift towards the southern and south-eastern parts of the country. Many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience rain or thunderstorms, while some areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions could also receive showers. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in places. Both daytime and night-time temperatures may rise slightly.
The wet conditions are forecast to persist into Monday. Many areas of Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive rain or thunderstorms, while some parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions are also likely to experience showers. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in places. Temperatures across the country are expected to remain almost unchanged.
The five-day outlook suggests that rainfall will not be confined to a single region. Instead, different parts of the country are likely to experience rain at different times as the monsoon system remains active. Gusty winds accompanying thunderstorms could cause short-lived disruptions to normal activities, particularly during periods of intense weather.
The possibility of heavy rainfall also means that low-lying areas could experience temporary waterlogging in places where drainage is inadequate. Conditions may also become difficult for road users during intense showers, particularly where visibility falls sharply.
With the monsoon remaining active over Bangladesh and the low-pressure system gradually weakening while interacting with the monsoon trough, weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled through the five-day period. The distribution and intensity of rainfall may change as the system evolves, making subsequent weather updates important for areas expecting heavier showers.
