Seven Sentenced to Death for Jamalpur Double Murder

A court in Jamalpur has sentenced seven individuals to death and another seven to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of an uncle and his nephew following a long-standing family feud. The verdict was delivered on Thursday afternoon by Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin.

In addition to the capital punishment, the court ordered each of the seven individuals condemned to death to pay a fine of fifty thousand taka. Meanwhile, those handed life sentences were each fined twenty thousand taka. All fourteen defendants were present in the courtroom when the judgement was read before being escorted back into custody under heavy police guard.

The individuals condemned to death are Md Sakhawat, Md Sohel, Al Amin, Md Saddam, Md Antor, Md Uzzal, and Md Fayzur. The defendants sentenced to life imprisonment include Chan Mia, Md Jiar, Md Shah Alam, Md Kawsar, Md Suman, Md Rifat, and Md Mostofa. All convicted parties hail from the Gajaria area within the Madarganj Upazila of Jamalpur district.

According to court documents and case records, the tragic events unfolded on the night of May 16, 2016. The perpetrators lured nineteen-year-old Mohor Ali and his sixteen-year-old nephew Swapan Mia away from their homes under the pretext of taking them to a musical performance. Instead, the victims were led to a jute field located in the Kukurmari area of Jorkhali Union, where they were brutally murdered by having their throats slit.

In a calculated attempt to conceal their identities and destroy evidence, the assailants poured a combustible substance over the bodies and set fire to their faces. Three days later, local police recovered the decomposed remains of the two victims from the jute field, sparking widespread outrage and grief throughout the community.

On May 19, 2016, Swapan Mia’s father, Jahangir Alam, filed a formal murder charge at Madarganj Police Station, naming twenty-two suspects in total. Following an exhaustive investigation, law enforcement officers submitted formal charges against fourteen individuals.

Government Pleader Mohammad Didarul Islam noted that the prosecution successfully established guilt during the trial by presenting eighteen witness testimonies and reviewing extensive evidence over several years. The swift conclusion of the judicial process has brought a measure of closure to the grieving families while reinforcing judicial accountability against violent crimes in rural communities.
