Two young children have lost their lives in separate drowning incidents within the Ulipur upazila of Kurigram, while a toddler remains injured. The heartbreaking sequence of events unfolded on a Thursday morning, casting a pall of grief over the local communities.
The victims have been identified as four-year-old Arman, son of Yunus Ali from the Paschim Naodanga area of Ulipur municipality, and three-year-old Masud Rana, son of Nur Alam hailing from Umanand village in Tabakpur Union.
According to local residents and family accounts, the incidents occurred between half past eight in the morning and midday. Young Masud Rana had been playing near his home when he wandered unobserved towards a nearby pond and slipped beneath the surface. Relatives launched a frantic search before discovering him and rushing him straight to the Ulipur Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival.
A remarkably similar tragedy played out shortly after in Paschim Naodanga. Little Arman was playing outside his family residence when he strayed away from adult supervision and fell into an adjacent pond. Family members pulled him from the water and hurried him to the hospital, but doctors confirmed he had already passed away.
Meanwhile, a third incident left a fifteen-month-old infant injured in the same upazila. Sumaiya Khatun, daughter of Rezwan from Doklapara village in Daldalia Union, fell into a body of water at around half past eight that morning. She was initially taken to the local health complex, but medical staff transferred her urgently to the Kurigram General Hospital as her condition deteriorated significantly.
Dr Tanzirul Islam, the resident medical officer at the Ulipur Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the grim timeline. He noted that both Masud Rana and Arman were brought in without any vital signs, whilst little Sumaiya was dispatched elsewhere for specialized medical attention.
Local law enforcement stepped in immediately following the reports. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saeed Ibne Siddique of Ulipur Police Station stated that because Masud Rana’s family raised no objections, his body was handed over to relatives following standard legal formalities, and an unnatural death case was registered. Police also visited the scene of Arman’s drowning to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Rural child drowning remains a persistent public safety concern across Bangladesh, particularly during the monsoon and summer months when village ponds, ditches, and floodwaters fill to the brim. Local authorities and child safety advocates frequently urge parents to maintain strict supervision of toddlers, emphasizing that open water bodies situated close to homesteads pose constant, silent hazards to unsupervised youngsters.
