The promise of marriage turned into a horrific trap when a middle-aged woman was lured to an isolated mango orchard, murdered, and set ablaze in northern Bangladesh. Law enforcement officials in Naogaon have successfully apprehended two suspects linked to the gruesome crime, shedding light on a calculated plot designed to erase a victim’s identity completely.
According to police briefings, the victim, Marina Begum, had eagerly prepared for what she believed was her upcoming wedding scheduled for August 16. Believing she was stepping toward a new chapter in her life, she purchased new shoes, clothing, and cosmetics. She carefully packed her National Identity Card, unaware that the journey would be her last.
The grim reality came to light on the evening of August 18, when local authorities in the Dhamoirhat upazila received reports of an unidentified, severely burned body lying inside a remote mango orchard in the Volkadanga area. Despite heavy rainfall, police rushed to the scene and recovered the remains. Dispersed near the body were cosmetics and a National Identity Card, items that would ultimately crack the case wide open.
Simultaneously, Marina’s son, Kawsar Ali, arrived at the Dhamoirhat police station to file a general diary reporting his mother missing. Police escorted him to the crime scene, where he positively identified the victim through the scattered identity documents and personal items.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam detailed the breakthrough during a press conference held at his office. Investigators utilized information technology, local intelligence gathering, and meticulous call log analysis to zero in on the primary suspects: Babul Hossain, a 49-year-old former union parishad member, and Tareq, a 21-year-old local resident. Both men were taken into custody following targeted raids and have reportedly confessed to their involvement during interrogation.
Police investigations revealed that Marina and Babul initially crossed paths through local milk trading, which soon blossomed into a regular telephone relationship. Over time, Marina began insisting that Babul formalize their bond through marriage, reportedly threatening self-harm if he refused.
Rather than confronting the situation honestly, Babul allegedly orchestrated a sinister plot. He assured Marina that the wedding would take place on August 16. Trusting his word, Marina left her home carrying her belongings and identification.
Instead of a ceremony, she was intercepted by Tareq and others acting on Babul’s instructions, shuttled via motorcycle and auto-rickshaw toward the Monihari-Talpukur roadside, and led deep into the dark mango orchard. There, the perpetrators strangled her using a belt. To conceal the murder and obliterate her identity, the attackers piled straw over her corpse, drenched it in petrol, and ignited it.
While Babul and Tareq face formal charges, authorities have confirmed that at least two other individuals remain at large. Police teams are actively conducting operations to secure their arrests. Marina’s husband, Hasen Ali, and her son Kawsar, both of whom work for a livelihood in Cumilla, are left to mourn a brutal betrayal rooted in deception.
