Australia Make One Change for Second Test Against Bangladesh

Australia Make One Change for Second Test Against Bangladesh

Australia will make just one change to their line-up for the second Test against Bangladesh, with Matt Renshaw returning to the side in place of Jake Weatherald.

Renshaw’s return had been widely anticipated, although uncertainty remained over Australia’s bowling combination. There had been considerable discussion over whether captain Pat Cummins would opt for four fast bowlers or select three pacemen alongside a specialist spinner.

Cummins himself was unable to confirm the combination during his pre-match press conference, saying the team would take more time before making the final decision. Australia subsequently confirmed a three-man pace attack for the second Test.

Renshaw’s selection marks his return to Test cricket for Australia for the first time since February 2023. His most recent Test appearance came against India, when he was used as a middle-order batter. This time, however, he will return to the top of the order as an opener.

The decision leaves Australia with only one change from the side that featured in the opening Test. Weatherald has made way for Renshaw, while the rest of the batting line-up has been retained.

The bowling selection has attracted particular attention following Nathan Lyon’s modest return in the first Test. The experienced off-spinner managed only one wicket across Bangladesh’s 9-wicket victory in Darwin, prompting speculation that Scott Boland could be brought into the XI for the second Test.

That possibility has not materialised. Boland, who claimed 20 wickets in the most recent Ashes series, will once again have to watch from the sidelines despite being in impressive form.

Cummins acknowledged the difficulty of leaving a bowler of Boland’s quality out of the team. The Australia captain had explained that the final combination would depend heavily on the conditions and how he expected the pitch to behave throughout the match.

“If we think there’s a good opportunity for the quicks to take 10 wickets quickly in either the first or second innings, and the wicket isn’t going to deteriorate too much by the fourth innings, then that will be a big factor in the decision,” Cummins said.

He also pointed to the strength of Australia’s fast-bowling options as one of the reasons the four-pacer combination had remained under consideration.

“Having someone like Scott Boland, who is a fantastic bowler, sitting on the bench is another factor,” Cummins said. “He’s an outstanding bowler, and I think that’s why the four-fast-bowler option keeps coming up.”

The decision to retain Lyon means Australia are continuing to trust their experienced spinner despite his limited impact in the opening match. Lyon has long been a key part of Australia’s Test attack, particularly when pitches begin to offer greater assistance to spin as matches progress.

Australia have also retained Marnus Labuschagne despite his prolonged wait for a Test century. Labuschagne has gone 21 Tests without reaching three figures, but Cummins remains confident that the batter is capable of producing a substantial score.

“He was once the number one batter in the world. He’s scored thousands of Test runs, so he certainly has the ability to score big,” Cummins said.

The captain added that Labuschagne had looked in particularly good touch during training over recent months, suggesting the Australian camp remains satisfied with his preparation and current form.

For Australia, the second Test therefore represents an attempt to respond to a heavy defeat without making wholesale changes. Renshaw’s return provides a fresh option at the top of the order, while the decision to stick with three fast bowlers and Lyon reflects the team management’s assessment of the conditions.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, will enter the match with confidence after their nine-wicket victory in Darwin. Australia’s decision to make only one change indicates that, despite the result of the opening Test, the visitors remain committed to the core of their squad and believe a more disciplined performance can put them back on level terms.
