Chhatra League Stages Show of Strength on Brahmanbaria Waterways

Scores of activists from the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) mounted a coordinated show of strength along the Titas River in Brahmanbaria on Sunday, congregating by boat and staging an impromptu rally on the riverbank in defiance of local restrictions. The assembly attracted widespread attention across the region after photographs and video footage of the gathering were circulated on social media platforms, showing demonstrators displaying commemorative banners for 15 August and chanting political slogans in support of the Awami League leadership.

According to local reports, more than one hundred activists assembled aboard two large engine-driven country boats along an open waterway near Brahmanbaria town during the morning hours. The group was met by Shahadat Hossain Shobhon, the general secretary of the Brahmanbaria District Chhatra League committee and a former upazila parishad chairman. Shobhon, who had been in hiding following recent political shifts, arrived aboard a speedboat to greet the assembling crowd in the centre of the river.

Following the mid-river rendezvous, the contingent landed at an open tract of land along the bank, where they hoisted a 15 August banner to conduct a brief political programme. Video footage shared across digital networks showed Shobhon addressing the gathering and leading slogans anticipating the political return of the Awami League president. District BCL Joint General Secretary Mikail Hossain and several other local student wing leaders were also identified among the participants.

Public attention was drawn to the river demonstration on Sunday evening after Akash Ahmed, an expatriate BCL activist, shared two video clips of the event on Facebook. The footage depicts dozens of young men packed aboard the boats, exchanging greetings with Shobhon as his vessel drew level, before transitioning to speeches delivered from the riverbank.

Local law enforcement authorities confirmed that they are reviewing the circulated materials to establish the facts surrounding the demonstration. Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station, stated that police had observed the video footage online and were conducting an inquiry to determine the precise location and timing of the unauthorised gathering.
