Padikkal Century Puts India in Command at Colombo

Devdutt Padikkal continued his remarkable sequence of scores on the opening day of the Colombo Test, crafting a resolute century to place India in a position of firm control against Sri Lanka. Having previously recorded a three-figure score in the series opener in Galle, the stylish left-hander demonstrated exceptional composure against both pace and spin, steering the touring side through several difficult passages of play to reach 300 for 5 by the close of the opening day.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Indian skipper Shubman Gill sought to capitalise on early batting conditions, despite noticeable moisture in the pitch during the initial hour. Openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal launched the innings with an enterprising 37-run alliance before Sri Lanka found their first opening. Rahul struggled to find fluency outside his off-stump, eventually departing for 18 from 33 balls after edging a ball that left him late. At the other end, Jaiswal played with characteristic enterprise, striking crisp boundaries on his way to 45 from 53 deliveries, only to miss out on a deserved half-century when the Sri Lankan seam attack found a disciplined channel.

The dismissals brought Gill and Padikkal together in the middle for what proved to be the pivotal stand of the day. The duo countered the home attack with an effective blend of resolute defence and sharp boundary-hitting, constructing an authoritative 120-run partnership for the third wicket. Gill reached a polished half-century, yet just as he appeared poised to convert the start into a commanding individual total, seamer Asitha Fernando extracted sharp bounce to find an edge that was comfortably taken by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, sending the Indian captain back for exactly 50.

India faced further uncertainty shortly afterwards when wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant took a blow during his brief stay at the crease, being forced off the field retired hurt on three and prompting a reshuffle in the middle order.

Padikkal, however, remained completely unruffled by the disruptions. Utilising precise timing through the off-side and assured placement off his pads, he seamlessly converted his fifty into another masterclass, finishing with a fine 117 from 193 deliveries that included twelve boundaries. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja provided vital impetus later in the day, contributing a brisk 43 from 83 balls to keep the run-rate steady before Sri Lanka struck late in the evening session.

By stumps, Dhruv Jurel on seven and Saransh Jain on four had successfully negotiated the closing overs to see India through to safety.

For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the standout performer among the bowlers. Bowling with relentless discipline, Fernando claimed figures of 3 for 46 from his 15 overs, while seamers Lahiru Kumara and Keshara Nuwantha secured a wicket each on a hard-fought opening day.
