Police have arrested Ehsan Ullah Pial, a central vice-president of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, from Belabo upazila in Narsingdi district. The 32-year-old political figure was apprehended on Sunday morning near the Sonali Bank building adjacent to Belabo Market. The operation was carried out by local law enforcement officers following specific intelligence leads regarding his whereabouts.
The arrest was formally executed under a case registered with Belabo Police Station on 10 February 2025 (Case No. 16). Law enforcement authorities confirmed that Pial has been shown arrested under several sections—specifically 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13—of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 (as amended in 2013). The statutory provisions involved in the case relate to alleged state-subversive activities, conspiring to disrupt public safety, funding or assisting unlawful gatherings, and orchestrating actions prejudicial to national security. Pial had reportedly been under continuous intelligence surveillance for a considerable period prior to the operation.
Pial is the son of the late Zahirul Haq (also locally known as Ullah) and Most. Khadija Begum, hailing from Nilakhiya Namapara village within the Sallabad Union of Belabo upazila. Given his prominent standing on the central executive committee of the student organisation and his active political footprint across Narsingdi, news of his arrest spread rapidly throughout the area, creating significant widespread interest and discussion across the local political landscape.
Officer-in-Charge of Belabo Police Station, S.M. Amanullah, confirmed the detention to reporters, explaining that the security operation was carried out in strict accordance with legal protocols based on specific, pending charges. He added that police documentation and primary procedural formalities are currently being completed so that the accused can be produced before the competent court within the statutory timeframe to seek further legal remand.
Detectives are continuing their broader investigation to determine whether additional individuals or wider political networks were directly linked to the activities outlined in the case file. Meanwhile, local authorities have maintained heightened vigilance and deployed extra police patrols across key junctions in Belabo to ensure overall public order and prevent any untoward incidents following the high-profile arrest.
