Two people have lost their lives and four others sustained injuries following a horrific three-way collision involving a goods-laden pickup van, a motorbike, and a battery-operated auto-rickshaw in Thakurgaon. The fatal accident occurred at around 8:00 am on Wednesday in the Kochubari Post Office Para area under Bhulli Upazila, along the busy Panchagarh-Thakurgaon highway.
One of the deceased has been identified as Anowara Begum, 45, wife of Shahjahan Ali from the Boro Balia area in Bhulli Upazila. The identity of the second victim, a man aged around 40, could not be established immediately by law enforcement officials.
Eyewitnesses and local police reported that the incident unfolded when a northbound cargo pickup van traveling from Dhaka to Panchagarh reached the Kochubari Post Office Para section of the highway. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed directly into an oncoming motorcycle. Unable to stop, the pickup van then collided head-on with a battery-driven auto-rickshaw carrying several passengers. The sequence of crashes left a total of seven people severely injured on the road.
Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing the crash. Fire Service personnel arrived shortly afterwards, assisting locals in rescuing the victims and transporting them to the Thakurgaon 250-Bed General Hospital. Medical staff admitted the victims for emergency treatment, but Anowara Begum and the unidentified man succumbed to their injuries while undergoing care. The remaining four injured passengers continue to receive medical treatment at the facility.
Following the collision, local residents apprehended the driver of the pickup van as he attempted to flee the scene and handed him over to the police. The arrested driver has been identified as Habibur Rahman, 24, son of Abdul Hamid from Bishkakuri village in the Bishkakuri area of East Dhabala, Netrokona. The involved pickup van was also impounded by law enforcement officers.
Nure Alam Siddiqui, Officer-in-Charge of Bhulli Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that police personnel were dispatched to both the crash site and the hospital to oversee proceedings. He noted that formal legal procedures are currently underway against the detained driver under relevant traffic and road safety laws, while efforts to establish the identity of the deceased man remain ongoing.
