Iran on Sunday executed two men accused of engaging in armed operations on behalf of the exiled opposition group, the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), according to the country’s judiciary.

The executions were carried out after what authorities described as a full legal process, including confirmation by the Supreme Court, reported Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official media outlet.

The two were further accused of producing and using improvised mortars, and launching attacks on homes, civilians, and charitable institutions. Authorities claimed these activities were recorded for dissemination through MEK-affiliated channels.

The exact dates of their arrest and the timeline of the investigation were not disclosed by officials.

Context and Background

The People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) is designated as a terrorist organisation by the Iranian government, though it operates in exile and has been based in Albania in recent years. It previously fought against the Islamic Republic following the 1979 revolution and aligned with Saddam Hussein’s regime during the Iran-Iraq war.

Iran’s use of the death penalty has long drawn criticism from international human rights organisations.

Capital Punishment in Iran

Global Rank Primary Method Common Charges
2nd highest (after China) Hanging at dawn Drug trafficking, murder, terrorism, moharebeh

According to Amnesty International and other rights groups, Iran remains one of the most prolific executioners in the world, often carrying out capital punishment for a broad range of serious crimes, including political offences.

These latest executions come amid continued scrutiny of Iran’s human rights record and judicial transparency, especially concerning political dissent and opposition activity.
