A thirty-five-year-old rickshaw-puller has died following a violent altercation in the capital’s Kadamtali area, where he was reportedly beaten by local residents after being accused of attempted mugging.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, at approximately 04:00 local time, near the Baruitola neighbourhood in Shyampur. According to local law enforcement, the victim has been identified as Joni, son of Tota Mistry. He resided with his family in a rented home along Nobarun Alley, located near the Shyampur Bridge.

Police officials from Kadamtali Police Station received emergency reports regarding the disturbance and dispatched a team to the scene. Officers rescued the injured man and rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), arriving at roughly 05:30. Despite immediate medical attention, attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival.

Sojib Kumar Barai, the inspector of investigation at Kadamtali Police Station, confirmed the details of the tragedy and stated that the deceased’s body has been transferred to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Preliminary findings from the police investigation suggest that the confrontation began when three individuals allegedly attempted to intercept two people along the Baruitola road. A physical struggle ensued between the suspected perpetrators and the local citizens. During the ensuing chaos, Joni sustained severe injuries from a beating administered by the gathered crowd.

While two of the suspects managed to flee the scene before authorities arrived, local residents detained one individual and handed him over to the police.

Meanwhile, grieving relatives gathered at the hospital following the news. Naim Islam, a cousin of the deceased, recounted that Joni had left home earlier in the night to ply his rickshaw and earn a livelihood for his family. Hours later, the family received the devastating notification, leading them to the DMCH morgue to identify the body.

Incidents involving mob justice and violent public reactions to suspected street crimes remain a persistent concern across urban centres. Law enforcement agencies continue to urge citizens to hand suspects over to the judiciary rather than taking the law into their own hands, as investigations into the precise sequence of events at Baruitola remain ongoing.
