Reports suggesting that Spanish football icons Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez applied to coach India’s national football team have been dismissed as false by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Clarification by AIFF
The confusion arose earlier in the week when Subrata Paul, AIFF’s National Team Director, publicly mentioned that Xavi had applied for the vacant head coach position. However, the AIFF released an official statement on Saturday denying the legitimacy of both Guardiola and Xavi’s alleged interest.
“The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez,” the statement read.
“The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine.”
Summary of the Situation
| Details | Information |
| Coaches involved | Pep Guardiola, Xavi Hernandez |
| Application status | Declared fake |
| Initial claim by AIFF | Xavi had applied for the head coach position |
| Guardiola’s application | Never publicly reported until this clarification |
| Final confirmation | Neither application was genuine |
Background: India’s Coaching Vacancy
The AIFF is currently in the process of recruiting a new head coach after Manolo Marquez, a Spaniard, resigned earlier this month. Marquez’s brief tenure lasted only one year, producing just one win in eight matches.
The federation opened applications for the position and reported receiving 170 submissions.
India’s Recent Form & Rankings
The Indian men’s team is currently facing a significant downturn in performance:
| Metric | Current Status |
|---|---|
| FIFA Ranking | 133rd (lowest in nearly a decade) |
| Last 16 matches | Only 1 win |
| Matches under Marquez | 1 win in 8 games |
The hoax applications have added a bizarre twist to an already challenging situation for Indian football, as the AIFF continues its search for a credible and committed head coach.
